The Magician
Major Arcana 1

What does The Magician mean?
The Magician is the first card of the Tarot de Marseille. He stands behind a table set with tools, holding a coin in one hand and a wand in the other. He symbolises our capacity to be present, to exist fully. He holds potentials in his hands and further abilities within himself, on his table.
The Magician represents new beginnings — a project, a new idea, the start of an activity. It is a novelty that opens future perspectives. It represents youth, active energy, health and vital force. With him, the querent is ready to accomplish things, to manifest joyfully and playfully in the world. The Magician is the art of doing and playing.
The Magician mirrors the querent's own abilities. He holds the four elements found in the Minor Arcana: the Coin (mastery of matter and money), the Wand (the art of creating and using intuition), the Sword (the art of thinking and expressing oneself) and the Cup (the art of loving and expressing feelings).
The shadow side of the arcana
The dark side of The Magician: an indecisive dabbler, incapable of following through on what he started. He is caught in "maybe," never quite committing. Here The Magician is too impulsive. He is impatient, cannot settle, and acts without enough wisdom.
The Magician in a reading
Everything begins here. I show my abilities. I exist. I assert myself. I make plans. I dare to take initiative and test new things. I am active by nature. I have a youthful, dynamic spirit. I have a joy of living. I enjoy having fun. A new situation is starting and everything is still possible.
I lack confidence in myself. I am afraid to assert myself. I fear taking initiative. Novelty frightens me. I lack experience. I hesitate. I start everything and finish nothing. I scatter my energy. I lack depth and constancy.
