What does Judgement mean?

Judgement is the twentieth card of the Tarot de Marseille. An angel blows a trumpet from the clouds while figures emerge from their tombs with arms raised toward the sky. It is the scene of the last judgement, of resurrection, of the call to rise up.

Judgement symbolises rebirth, awakening, the inner call to question oneself and transform. It is the card of lucid reckoning — the moment when one takes stock of what one has lived, learned, and what must now be left behind to move forward. It represents forgiveness, reconciliation and deep renewal.

It also embodies vocation, the strong inner call that demands to be heard and followed. With Judgement, we are invited to respond to this call, to take stock without complacency or self-destruction, and to rise toward a higher version of oneself. It says that it is never too late to start over on more just foundations.

The shadow side of the arcana

The dark side of Judgement: gnawing regret, paralysing guilt, refusal of the inner call to change. It may symbolise an inability to take stock or to forgive — oneself or others. In shadow, Judgement is a condemnation without appeal, with no possibility of redemption.

Judgement in a reading

Upright (positive)

I respond to a deep calling. I wake up. I take stock of my life with clarity and kindness. I rise after an ordeal. I reconcile with someone or with myself. I forgive myself. I start over on more authentic foundations. A new life phase begins, marked by a deeper understanding of who I am and what I truly want.

Reversed (negative)

I am consumed by regret or guilt. I refuse to hear the call to change. I condemn myself without giving myself the chance to rise. Or I refuse an honest reckoning, preferring to continue as if nothing were wrong. I am deaf to my own inner voice. I must learn to listen to myself, to forgive myself, to rise.
