The World
Major Arcana 21

What does The World mean?
The World is the twenty-first and final numbered card of the Tarot de Marseille. It depicts an often androgynous figure dancing within a laurel wreath, surrounded by the four evangelist symbols: the eagle, the bull, the lion and the angel. Everything radiates harmony, fulfilment and wholeness.
The World symbolises total accomplishment, integration and the union of all oppositions in perfect harmony. It is the card of complete success, the completed cycle, the being who has traversed all experiences and emerged transformed, enriched and unified. It is the dance of one who has found their place in the universe.
It also embodies important journeys, international expansion and the ability to be fully at home wherever one goes. With The World, we are invited to celebrate what has been accomplished, to honour the path walked, and to prepare for a new cycle still richer.
The shadow side of the arcana
The dark side of The World: the feeling of incompleteness despite everything, fear of closing a chapter even when necessary, stagnation on the threshold of an achievement. It can also symbolise a closing in on oneself, a satisfaction that becomes immobility, or a perfection so total that it leaves no room for growth.
The World in a reading
I complete something important. I fully succeed. I am in harmony with myself and the world. I feel I am in my rightful place. A cycle completes magnificently. I radiate a deep unity. It is the moment to celebrate, to acknowledge the path walked, to open toward an even greater new adventure from this summit of accomplishment.
I cannot finish what I started. I am on the threshold of an achievement but refuse to cross it. I am afraid to finish because finishing means starting over — and that frightens me. I am stagnating when I could conclude. Or I have a chronic feeling of incompleteness despite everything I have achieved. I must learn to honour my victories.
