The Tower
Major Arcana 16
What does The Tower mean?
The Tower is the sixteenth card of the Tarot de Marseille, called "The House of God" in the Marseille tradition. It depicts a tall tower struck by lightning, its top exploding, with figures falling head first. It is an image of brutal rupture and sudden destruction — but also of liberation.
The Tower symbolises rupture, revelation, the crisis that forces transformation. It is the card of the lightning bolt of truth that destroys false structures. What collapses was not solid — The Tower reveals what was held together only by habit, fear or illusion.
It embodies the necessary shock, the abrupt end of a situation that could not last. With The Tower, we are invited not to resist the collapse, to trust that what falls was meant to fall. It says that on the ruins of what was false, one can finally build something true.
The shadow side of the arcana
The dark side of The Tower: chaos without reconstruction, gratuitous destruction, trauma that prevents one from rising again. It may symbolise an accident, a catastrophe, a violent shock from which recovery is not easy. In shadow, the lightning does not liberate — it devastates without leaving space to rebuild.
The Tower in a reading
A truth erupts — painfully but liberatingly. A false structure collapses. I am freed from a situation that imprisoned me, even if the rupture is brutal. A shock awakens me. I finally see things as they are. What falls was meant to fall. On these ruins, I will be able to rebuild something more authentic. Truth, at last.
I am experiencing a brutal and painful rupture. I am destabilised, shocked. A situation collapses against my will. I resist a change that is imposing itself with force. I am in denial facing an obvious truth. I must find the strength to rise after this shock and not imprison myself in victimhood. What collapses forces me to reinvent myself.
