Death
Major Arcana 13

What does the Death card mean?
Death is the thirteenth card of the Tarot de Marseille — traditionally called the Nameless Arcana. It depicts a skeleton armed with a scythe mowing everything in its path: heads, hands, legs sprout from the soil like plants. This image has often been called "Death," though that name does not appear in the original Tarot de Marseille texts.
Death symbolises radical transformation, the end of a cycle, the symbolic death of what was to make way for what comes. It does not announce physical death — it is the end of a life stage, a relationship, a way of being. It is the arcana of great metamorphosis.
It embodies the necessity of letting go, of not resisting what must end. With Death, we are invited to grieve what has died, to honour what was, and to open ourselves to the rebirth that inevitably follows. It says that nothing can truly begin until we have accepted what must end.
The shadow side of the arcana
The dark side of Death: refusing to release what is already dead, resistance to transformation, paralysing fear of change. It may symbolise unprocessed grief, morbid attachment to the past, or conversely gratuitous destruction that leaves nothing to grow. In shadow, the scythe mows without discernment.
Death in a reading
An ending occurs — necessary and liberating. I grieve what was. I free myself of what no longer serves me. I am in full transformation. A chapter closes definitively so another can open. I release a relationship, a situation, an identity that imprisoned me. This symbolic death opens me toward a deep and authentic rebirth.
I resist an inevitable change. I cling to what is already dead. I refuse to grieve. I am paralysed by fear of change. Or I am in a phase of destruction without reconstruction. I must learn to release what is leaving with gratitude for what it was, and confidence in what it will allow to be born.
